NEW! Recommendation on Prospective Donees for McArthur Swamp
The Watershed Planning Committee of the Stewardship Council has forwarded to the Board of Directors a recommendation from the
staff of the Stewardship Council regarding the selection of prospective
donees at the McArthur Swamp Planning Unit.
The Planning Committee is endorsing the selection of:
The Shasta Land Trust to hold conservation easements over the retained and donated lands.
Fall River Resource Conservation District (RCD) to receive fee title ownership to the property.
The committee endorses the recommendation that the California Waterfowl Association, California State Parks, and the Pit River Tribe serve as conservation partners to actively participate in future efforts to preserve and enhance the beneficial public values on the lands to
be conveyed.
Summaries for the McArthur Swamp Land Stewardship Proposals
On Feb. 6, 2009, the Stewardship Council received two proposals for the McArthur Swamp planning unit, one of four pilot sites. One proposal was prepared and submitted as a collaborative among four eligible donees (Fall River RCD, Pit River Tribe, Shasta Land Trust and the California State Parks) and a technical advisory committee. The second proposal was prepared and submitted by Shasta County and the California Waterfowl Association. The following executive summaries were taken directly from the submitted proposals.
Located in Shasta County’s Fall River Valley within the ancestral territory of the Ahjumawi Band of the Pit River Indian Tribe, just north of the town of McArthur, is the 7,596 acre McArthur Swamp. With snow-capped Mount Shasta visible in the distance, the open grasslands of the swamp have provided forage for livestock grazing for the past 70 years. Within the watershed’s spring-fed lakes, rivers and creeks, you might find rare water dwellers including the rough sculpin, bigeye sculpin, northwestern pond turtle and Shasta crayfish. The Audubon Society designated these wetlands as an Important Bird Area – tens of thousands of birds, including geese, mallards, and widgeons, make the swamp their winter home. With access to Big Lake and the banks of Fall River, McArthur Swamp is a great destination for boating, fishing and hunting enthusiasts and it makes an ideal jumping off point to the neighboring Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park. McArthur Swamp is truly one of California’s treasures.
